Includes correspondence with the firm's retailers in San Francisco, including Hostetter & Smith (later Hostetter, Smith & Dean), A.F. Downing & Son, and the advertising agent Thomas Boyce. The collection provides documentation on patent medicines sold in California, advertising techniques, and the importation of opium from Turkey and China. Includes typed transcripts of selected letters.

Located in New York City, the pharmaceutical firm of Lanman and Kemp (David T. Lanman) supplied patent medicines and other drugs to retailers in California.
